Fire Barriers

Fire barriers are an essential safety feature in any building and are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke from one area to another.

Fire barrier solutions create a fire resistance safety window of anything between 30 minutes to 4 hours. This allows emergency services to get on top of the situation, prevents excess damage, and lets you evacuate the building quickly and safely.

Why are fire barriers important?

The primary use of fire barriers is to compartmentalise your building to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.

A fire-resisting cavity barrier should be installed to create separate compartments, so fire, smoke and gas can’t spread from one area to another.

Fire is a hazard in any residential or commercial building. Get it wrong, and the results can be devastating. As well as putting lives at risk, failure to meet UK Building Regulations for fire compliance could also result in a substantial fine or prosecution.

Correctly installed, fire barriers prevent the movement of fire through a building. They achieve this by creating compartments throughout the space with fire-proof barriers on all sides, including the doors, ceiling, walls and floors.

What is a fire barrier?

Fire barriers are available in a range of formats. Most of us are aware of fire-resisting doors, but other barriers include:

  • Fire-resisting walls
  • Fire-resisting floors
  • Fire-resisting glazing
  • Fire curtains

Fire barriers vs cavity barriers:
What’s the difference?

The terms fire barrier and cavity barrier are sometimes used interchangeably. Both should be considered as part of a passive fire resistance solution but there are some significant differences:

  • A fire barrier creates a fire-resistant compartment that helps stop a fire from spreading throughout a building. They can offer fire resistance for one to four hours.
  • A cavity barrier, on the other hand, is made from intumescent material that is fire-sensitive. The barrier reacts to fire to seal up any hidden voids in the building and prevent the unseen spread of fire and smoke. Typically, cavity barriers are rated for 30 minutes of fire resistance.

We’ll survey your project and create a bespoke fire-stopping solution, including cavity barrier installation and fire barrier upgrades.

Gunfire’s fire barriers are rigorously tested and certified to comply with BS or EN standards. Our fire-stopping technicians are highly trained and always up-to-date with the latest techniques. This ensures that our installation and maintenance services are reliable and trustworthy.

Fire Barrier installation and maintenance

Whichever fire barriers you opt for, it’s important to make sure they’re installed properly and  maintained to the highest standards. The best way to do this is to seek support from an experienced fire safety solutions company — like Gunfire.

We can install insulating fire barrier curtains or flexible and lightweight fire barriers. We also install and maintain fire doors and cavity barriers for a complete passive fire protection solution.

Once installed, our fire barrier solutions provide up to 60 minutes of insulation and 120 minutes of fire resistance. Our fire barriers are suitable for risers, lofts and ceiling voids, ensuring that fire and smoke can’t spread between compartments.

All our fire-resisting walls continue above the ceiling to the underside of the roof. In addition, we can supply fire-resistant handrails, walkways and access hatches for the roof space if required.
